Extension of the CES Mereni–Plopeni–Salcea Development for Flood Prevention in the Salcea Area
As part of a comprehensive project, AQUAPROIECT SA played a pivotal role in protecting the town of Salcea and the surrounding critical infrastructure through consolidation and regulation works on the Salcea Valley.
Implemented Interventions:
- Flood protection for the entire town;
- Riverbed stabilization to safeguard roads and residential areas;
- Ensuring the safe operation of the “Ștefan cel Mare” International Airport;
- Rehabilitation of the stormwater drainage channel from the airport platform;
- Prevention of agricultural land loss through bank stabilization and reinforcement of lateral formations;
- River course regulation works, including grading and durable reinforcement solutions.
Final Outcome: A protected area, secured infrastructure, and a stabilized watercourse—thanks to the expertise of a team with solid experience in hydrotechnical development.

Feasibility Study for the Modernization of the Danube–Black Sea Canal and the Poarta Albă–Midia Năvodari Canal – Enhancing Navigation Safety
The Danube–Black Sea Canal, together with the Poarta Albă–Midia Năvodari Canal, is a strategically important infrastructure for both Romania and the European Union, forming an essential part of the Pan-European Corridor VII.
AQUAPROIECT SA’s Involvement
Between 2020 and 2021, AQUAPROIECT SA conducted a comprehensive geotechnical study in preparation for the canal’s rehabilitation. The analyzed area, marked by geological instability and extensive landslides (e.g., the Cumpăna area), required advanced investigation methods—deep drilling, geological and hydrogeological mapping, and detailed laboratory analyses, all correlated with existing studies.
Results and Benefits
- Clear recommendations for slope stabilization and addressing the root causes of landslides;
- Optimization of canal operations and increased safety in navigation;
- Direct contribution to Romania’s integration into the European transport networks (TEN-T) and to regional economic development;
- An efficient alternative to road and rail transport, with positive impacts on reducing land traffic and CO₂ emissions.
Strategic Significance
The modernization of the navigable canal system (CDMN + CPAMN), linking the Danube River to the Black Sea, represents a critical step toward boosting regional economic competitiveness, promoting sustainable inland waterway transport, and achieving a more effective integration of Romania into international logistics networks.

Flood Protection for the Town of Babadag
The flood protection project for the town of Babadag, Tulcea County, financed through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (POIM) 2014–2020 (Priority Axis 5 – Disaster Risk Reduction), aimed primarily to protect the population and infrastructure within the urban area of the town, located in the Tabana stream watershed.
Executed Works:
- Rehabilitation of existing hydrotechnical structures damaged by flash floods;
- Regulation of the Tabana stream and its tributaries;
- Soil erosion control and land stabilization measures;
- Flood control through the construction of a temporary upstream retention basin;
- Rehabilitation of bridges to ensure optimal flow sections.
Project Impact:
This project significantly enhances safety for the residents of Babadag, reduces material damages, and protects key public infrastructure against extreme hydrometeorological events. It aligns with the objectives of the National Flood Risk Management Strategy and adheres to relevant European Union directives in the field.
